How It Works & Formula
Your composite score out of 100 is calculated by weighting the Multiple Choice section at 45% and the three essays equally to comprise the remaining 55%.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the 2026 AP Lang curve different?
The College Board does not pre-announce curves. Curves are determined each year based on standard setting to ensure a score of 3 means the same thing year over year, regardless of test difficulty.
How many MCQ do I need right to pass?
To get a 3, you typically need a composite score around 43/100. If you score average on essays (say, 3s or 4s), you would need to get about 20-25 multiple choice questions correct.
How are the Free Response Questions (FRQ) scored?
Each of the three essays is scored on a 0-6 point rubric: 1 point for the thesis, up to 4 points for evidence and commentary, and 1 point for sophistication.
What score do I need to get college credit?
Most public universities offer credit for a 3 or higher. More selective private colleges may require a 4 or a 5 to grant credit or allow you to place out of introductory writing courses.
Is guessing penalized on the MCQ?
No. There is no penalty for guessing on AP exams. You should answer every multiple-choice question, even if you have to guess.
Which essay is weighted the most?
All three essays (Synthesis, Rhetorical Analysis, and Argument) carry exactly the same weight. Each represents about 18.33% of your total exam score.
How hard is it to get a sophistication point?
It is quite rare. Only a small percentage of students earn the sophistication point. It requires demonstrating a deep understanding of the rhetorical situation and writing with a consistent, complex style.
What is the typical average score for AP Lang?
Historically, the average score hovers slightly above a 2.7, with roughly 55-60% of students scoring a 3 or higher on the exam.
